UPDATE: Storm Floris has officially hit Donegal, bringing severe weather conditions that are wreaking havoc across the region. Yellow wind and rain warnings are now in effect, with local officials urging residents to prepare for potential flooding, power outages, and structural damage.

Starting in the early hours of this morning, October 16, 2023, Storm Floris is tracking northwest of Ireland. Meteorologists at Met Éireann are forecasting damaging gusts and dangerous driving conditions, particularly along the west and northwest coasts. The worst of the storm is anticipated to impact Scotland, where amber warnings indicate a potential “danger to life.”

Authorities report that a yellow wind warning for Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, and Leitrim began at 4am and will remain in place until 4pm. Additionally, a yellow rain warning is active until 10am, causing concern for travelers and outdoor events due to expected hazardous conditions.

Met Éireann’s Andrew Doran Sherlock stated, “Unseasonably wet and windy weather is on the way with the approach of Storm Floris,” highlighting the serious risks facing residents. The yellow alert issued by the UK’s Met Office for all of Northern Ireland is also active for 24 hours, commencing at 6am today.

Residents are advised to expect injuries and danger to life from large waves and debris being thrown onto coastal roads and properties. Authorities are urging caution as many areas are likely to experience fallen trees and loose objects due to the storm’s intensity.

Looking ahead, Met Éireann forecasts that tomorrow will bring a respite from the storm with a return to predominantly dry weather across Ulster. Expect scattered showers mainly in the morning, with temperatures ranging from 15 to 19 degrees Celsius and moderate winds shifting to lighter breezes later in the day.
