Taoiseach Slams Peter McVerry Trust Over $300K Peacock Enclosure
UPDATE: Taoiseach Micheál Martin has condemned the Peter McVerry Trust for allocating over €300,000 to construct a peacock enclosure at one of its properties in Co Kildare. Speaking at the G20 Summit in Johannesburg today, Martin described the decision as “very disappointing and worrying,” especially given the charity’s crucial role in providing social housing.
The shocking details emerged during a session of the Oireachtas Public Accounts Committee, where it was revealed that funds were also spent on resurfacing and widening the driveway and building a second lift shaft at the property. Martin stressed the importance of the Trust’s mission, stating, “There are a lot of homes under the stewardship of the Father Peter McVerry Trust, and that’s important too.”
The Taoiseach emphasized that while the Trust has made a significant impact in housing vulnerable populations, including the homeless and those with addictions, financial mismanagement could undermine public confidence. He expressed hope for the charity’s leadership, noting that Chairperson Tony O’Brien has the “capacity to turn this around.”
Martin’s comments come as the charity faces a tumultuous financial landscape. Former CEO Francis Doherty revealed to the committee that the Trust’s finances were in “such a poor state” when he took over in 2023 that they were “verging on total collapse.” The organization currently manages approximately 1,000 properties and operates with an annual budget exceeding €60 million, employing around 700 staff.
Martin reassured the public that the government would continue to provide funding for the Trust but insisted on the need for improved accountability and a return to its core mission: building homes for those in need. “We have to look after existing tenants,” he said, highlighting ongoing construction projects aimed at alleviating housing shortages.
As this story develops, it raises critical questions about the management of charitable funds and the pressing need for transparency in organizations responsible for social welfare. Readers are urged to follow this unfolding situation as it has significant implications for housing policy and charitable governance in Ireland.
