Teacher Banned for 5 Years After Defrauding €2,000 from Colleagues
UPDATE: A primary schoolteacher has been barred from teaching for at least five years after defrauding colleagues of over €2,000. This decision, announced by the Teaching Council, comes after the teacher fraudulently induced three colleagues to pay for Apple products that were never delivered, leaving them and the school in a financial bind.
The inquiry revealed shocking details about the teacher’s actions during September and October 2021. She received €1,102 from a fellow teacher and €375 and €545 from two special needs assistants (SNAs). Additionally, she took out two loans of €500 each from the school board of management, repaying only €50 to date.
Panel chairman Paul Moroney described the teacher’s conduct as “disgraceful [and] dishonourable,” highlighting how her actions deprived students of vital resources. The inquiry found her guilty of professional misconduct and breaches of the Code of Conduct for Teachers.
Despite the teacher’s claims of personal difficulties—including a gambling addiction and multiple family tragedies—the inquiry concluded she demonstrated a lack of empathy for her victims. Furthermore, Moroney noted that the teacher’s limited apology suggested no real insight into her actions.
The inquiry’s finding comes after the teacher previously appeared in court regarding the same allegations, where she avoided a conviction under the Probation Act. She has since resigned from her position at the school.
Authorities have emphasized the importance of trust in the educational environment, and the repercussions of such actions are profound not only for the individuals involved but also for the larger school community. The teacher may not apply for readmission for at least five years, with Moroney stating, “the panel cannot say when, if ever” she would be allowed to return.
As this story develops, it raises critical questions about accountability and ethical behavior in educational institutions. The impact of her fraudulent actions will resonate within the school community for years to come, as trust has been severely undermined.
