Tesco UK Offers Free Wonky Christmas Trees, Ireland Left Out

UPDATE: Tesco has just announced a free giveaway of ‘wonky Christmas trees’ in select UK stores this Saturday, December 6. However, the promotion will NOT be available in Ireland, leaving many Irish shoppers disappointed.

This unique initiative aims to celebrate the “imperfect side of the festive season.” Hundreds of slightly misshapen trees—often deemed unfit for sale due to uneven branches or minor tilts—will be available for one day only. Shoppers are encouraged to take a tree while making a donation to food charities Fareshare and Trussell.

Despite high hopes, a Tesco representative confirmed to the Irish Mirror that “this promotion is not available in the Republic of Ireland this year.” This news comes as Irish households traditionally begin decorating their trees around December 8, linked to the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

A recent survey from tarot reading platform Tarotoo reveals that nearly 9% of Irish people strongly believe putting up a Christmas tree too early brings bad luck. Additionally, 16% somewhat agree, while 48% disagree with this superstition, showing a divide in decorating practices across the country.

As many Irish families ponder when to put up their trees—some opting for the first weekend of December or around the time of the Late Late Toy Show—the absence of the Tesco promotion may push them to seek alternative festive solutions this year.

Stay tuned for updates and see how communities adapt as the holiday season approaches!
