Three Arrested During National Lockdown Protest in Limerick
UPDATE: Three individuals were arrested during a National Lockdown protest that disrupted traffic in the heart of Limerick this past Saturday. The protest, organized by the group Limerick Says No, drew attention on social media, urging citizens to “join the day to make our voices heard!!!”
The gathering began at Arthur’s Quay Park around noon, with demonstrators marching on foot toward the Shannonbridge roundabout. Witnesses reported a crowd of a few dozen protesters, including children, expressing their opposition to lockdown measures.
A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána confirmed that officers were present to manage the public gathering. In enforcing public order, two men—aged in their 30s and 60s—along with a woman in her 30s, were arrested for failing to comply with police directions under the Public Order Act. All three were subsequently taken to a local garda station.
Footage circulating on social media shows police escorting the arrested individuals to the Henry Street garda station. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the protest, and the attendees dispersed shortly after the arrests.
Following their detainment, all three individuals were released without charge. The Garda spokesperson noted that files will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
“Our officers respect the right of citizens to express their constitutional rights; however, this right does not permit breaches of criminal law or interference with the rights of others,” stated the Garda spokesperson. They emphasized that enforcement measures are taken as a last resort, considering public safety and relevant legislation.
As public sentiment surrounding lockdown measures continues to evolve, this incident reflects the ongoing tensions and debates surrounding the issue. The protest in Limerick highlights a growing movement among citizens voicing their concerns over governmental restrictions.
As the situation develops, observers are urged to stay informed about any further statements from authorities regarding public gatherings and law enforcement measures in Limerick.
