UPDATE: Three extraordinary individuals are set to receive the prestigious National Bravery Awards this afternoon for their lifesaving actions in Galway City. The ceremony will take place at Leinster House at 4 PM, where medals and certificates will be presented, recognizing their remarkable courage in the face of danger.

Among the honorees is Garda Inspector Brendan O’Grady from Kinvara, who, alongside Garda Aiden McTigue, performed a daring rescue along the River Corrib in July 2020. When a man threatened to jump into the fast-moving waters, both officers acted swiftly. After the man fell into the river, O’Grady retrieved a lifebuoy while McTigue dove into the turbulent waters. Despite the man’s attempts to drag them under, O’Grady and McTigue held on, ultimately bringing him back to safety.

Also being honored today is Eoin Clancy from Headford, who bravely rescued a young woman near Spanish Arch in September 1992. Clancy, while crossing Wolfe Tone Bridge with friends at around 3 AM, heard cries for help. Without hesitation, he swam to save the woman as she was struggling to stay afloat, managing to keep her above water until emergency services arrived.

Additionally, Jonathan Monroe from Mayo will receive recognition for his heroic act in July 2022. Spotting a man in distress in the Eglinton Canal, Monroe stripped off his clothes and dove in. Despite the challenges, he successfully lifted the man onto his back and swam him to safety.

A total of 22 awards will be distributed today, as announced by Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy, highlighting incredible acts of bravery that have made a significant impact on the community. These awards not only honor the recipients but also inspire others to act courageously in critical situations.

As the ceremony unfolds, the stories of these heroes serve as a reminder of the profound impact of selflessness and bravery in our society. Stay tuned for live updates on this inspiring event. Share this article to celebrate the brave souls who risked everything to save others!
