Tirlán Introduces Feed Support to Aid Milk Production Amid Dry Conditions

Tirlán, a cooperative based in Kilkenny, has launched a feed support initiative aimed at assisting its family farm milk suppliers in maintaining milk output during a challenging dry period. This support package includes a rebate of €30 per tonne on GAIN dairy feed, €10 per tonne on Irish rolled cereals, and €3 per tonne on straights. The recent dry weather has significantly reduced grass growth and availability in parts of the Tirlán catchment area, hindering efforts to build sufficient grass reserves for the autumn.
The impact of these conditions is palpable, with many suppliers facing challenges in maintaining their herds’ nutritional needs. A recent survey conducted among Tirlán milk suppliers indicated that approximately 90% of the 593 respondents reported either a declining average farm cover or difficulties in building grass reserves on their farms. As a result, more conserved forage is being fed, which is directly affecting milk supply in certain areas.
Details of the Feed Support Initiative
The feed support program will be available for a three-week period from August 24 to September 13, 2025. It applies to all GAIN dairy feed, Irish rolled cereals, and straights delivered during this timeframe. A number of terms and conditions are associated with the support to ensure that it effectively meets the needs of the suppliers.
Ailish Byrne, Tirlán’s Chief Agri Officer, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Our teams are actively assisting suppliers with grass budgeting and providing nutritional advice to enhance cow performance and health. Through engaging with and listening to our dairy farmers, it’s clear there is a requirement to assist our family farms during this period. This support is designed to help suppliers avoid a sharp drop in milk output for this time of year, build grass reserves for the autumn, and conserve winter feed stocks.”
Tirlán milk suppliers are encouraged to place their orders through their local Tirlán branch, Business Manager, or online via the Tirlán FarmLife platform by accessing ‘My Account.’ This strategic approach aims to strengthen the resilience of dairy farmers during a period of environmental stress, ensuring they can continue to meet the energy needs of their herds and maintain milk production levels.
As the agricultural community navigates these challenging conditions, initiatives like Tirlán’s feed support program play a crucial role in safeguarding the livelihood of family farms and the overall stability of milk supply in the region.
