Tragic Death of Paul Butler Sparks Investigation After Dublin Incident
UPDATE: A tragic incident in Dublin city centre has resulted in the death of Paul Butler, a well-known local figure, after he reportedly struck his head on the ground. The incident, which occurred outside the Holiday Inn on O’Connell Street, is now under investigation by Fiosrú, the independent police ombudsman.
Authorities confirm that Butler, aged 51, died on August 15, 2025, three days after the incident, during which Gardaí allegedly intervened when he was seen urinating in public early Friday morning. Sources indicate that a Garda has denied any wrongdoing, claiming he attempted to catch Butler as he stumbled and fell.
Witnesses reported that the encounter escalated quickly, leading to Butler’s fall onto the concrete, resulting in fatal injuries. Fiosrú is now reviewing CCTV footage to determine the sequence of events. The Garda involved in the incident is reportedly still on duty and has not faced internal disciplinary actions yet.
The investigation is critical as it seeks answers for Butler’s family, who are grieving the loss of a beloved member known for his connections within the community. Butler was part of a large family, with several siblings and relatives who serve in the Gardaí.
Fiosrú is appealing for any witnesses who were present at the Holiday Inn around 4:15 AM on August 15 to come forward. They are particularly interested in any dashcam footage from vehicles passing through the area during that time.
A spokesperson for Fiosrú stated:
“It is vital to the investigation that any persons who witnessed this serious incident contact us. We thank those who have already provided information and encourage others to come forward.”
Butler was rushed to a local hospital after the incident but succumbed to his injuries on Monday evening. Fiosrú is conducting a thorough investigation, liaising with the Dublin City Coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist regarding a post-mortem examination.
As this situation develops, the community awaits answers while grappling with the emotional impact of Butler’s untimely death. Updates from Fiosrú are expected as they continue their investigation into this tragic incident.
For anyone with information, Fiosrú can be contacted at 0818 600 800 or via email at info@fiosrú.ie. The urgency of this investigation underscores the need for transparency and accountability in the wake of such a heartbreaking event.
