Tragic Multi-Vehicle Crash in Meath Claims Two Lives, Injures Others
UPDATE: A devastating multi-vehicle crash in Gormanston, Co Meath has resulted in the tragic deaths of two drivers, including a Bus Éireann operator. Local authorities have confirmed that the lorry driver, identified as Wesley O’Reilly, aged in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene this morning around 6:30 AM. The Bus Éireann driver, in his 50s, also lost his life in this catastrophic incident.
The collision involved a lorry, a Bus Éireann bus on its 101 service, and a car. Several passengers suffered injuries, with a woman in her 40s and a teenage girl being hospitalized with serious conditions. The woman was transported to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, while the girl was initially taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital before being moved to Temple Street Children’s Hospital for further treatment.
Authorities have closed the R132 road to conduct a forensic examination of the crash site. The wreckage removal is expected to continue into the evening, causing significant disruption in the area.
Bus Éireann has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their colleague. Chief Executive Jean O’Sullivan stated, “We are devastated by this tragic incident. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of our Bus Éireann driver who has sadly lost his life.” The company is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.
Local officials and community members are in mourning, with Helen McEntee, Minister for Foreign Affairs, stating, “My heart goes out to the families and loved ones of the two men who lost their lives.” She emphasized the tragic timing, as the community grapples with the emotional aftermath of a recent crash that claimed five young lives in Dundalk.
Deputy Vice President of the Irish Road Haulage Association, Eugene Drennan, described the incident as “numbing,” stressing the sorrow felt across the community. Emergency services responded promptly, and Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dash-cam footage from the R132 between 5:45 AM and 6:45 AM to come forward.
As the investigation unfolds, local leaders are urging community support for the families affected. Sinn Féin TD Darren O’Rourke called the situation “devastating” and thanked emergency responders for their efforts. Independent councillor Amanda Smith remarked, “The whole community is in shock… it’s an awful thing to happen.”
As the investigation continues, the community remains united in grief, highlighting the immediate need for road safety awareness. The loss felt by friends, families, and colleagues is profound, as they come to terms with the impact of this tragic event.
