Trial Adjourned as Phone Evidence Points to Innocence in €33M Meth Case

UPDATE: The trial of James Leen, accused of leading a criminal organization and importing €33 million worth of crystal meth, has been adjourned as new mobile phone evidence emerges that could exonerate him. The Special Criminal Court heard on February 19, 2024, that a mobile phone expert requires additional time to analyze crucial data related to the case.

Defense attorney Colm Smyth argued that the prosecution’s entire case hinges on this mobile evidence, which allegedly links Leen to conversations with criminal figures. The evidence is critical as it connects Leen to the importation of three machines, one of which contained the 564 kilograms of methamphetamine seized by gardaí at Cork Port last year.

The drugs were reportedly shipped from Mexico and stored at the Ballyseedy Garden Centre before being destined for export to Australia. Smyth emphasized that a thorough examination of the mobile phones will prove Leen’s innocence regarding the third machine involved, which contained the illegal drugs.

“While the messages may suggest Mr. Leen’s involvement with two machines, he had no connection to the third,” Smyth asserted, describing the prosecution’s case as a “conflation of facts.” Leen, who has been in custody since early last year, is eager to begin the trial but insists on a proper defense.

Ms. Justice Karen O’Connor presided over the court and agreed to adjourn the case until December 19, 2024, to allow the defense expert adequate time to compile the necessary report. Leen faces five charges, including directing a criminal organization and the importation of crystal meth.
