Tributes Flow for Michael McLoone, GAA Legend and County Manager
Michael McLoone, the former County Manager of Donegal and a celebrated figure in Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) circles, has passed away, prompting an outpouring of tributes from across the community. The Aodh Ruadh club in Ballyshannon, where McLoone was a key player, described him as a “legend, not just of Aodh Ruadh, but of Donegal.” His contributions to both local government and sport have left a lasting impact.
A Legacy of Leadership and Achievement
McLoone served as Donegal County Manager from 1994 until 2010. During his tenure, he implemented several groundbreaking initiatives, including the establishment of Public Services Centres in Carndonagh, Donegal Town, Dungloe, Letterkenny, and Milford. His work in local government was characterized by a commitment to community development and public service.
Beyond his administrative roles, McLoone was also the Chief Executive Officer of Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, a position that further underscored his leadership skills. He served on the board of the Health Service Executive, contributing to health policy and governance in Ireland.
McLoone’s sports career was equally impressive. He was a notable player for Aodh Ruadh and represented Donegal at a high level. The club commemorated his achievements on social media, highlighting his selection on the Donegal team of the Millennium as a wing forward. He was recognized for his prolific scoring ability, which made him a significant force on the field.
“A prolific scorer and true attacking menace, he was a driving force in the Saint Joseph’s team which won county championships in 1965, 1966, and 1968. Even in a team garlanded with supreme talents, McLoone stood out as a cut above,” the tribute recalled.
Family and Community Impact
Michael McLoone is survived by his wife, Imelda, and their children, Michael, David, Philip, and Caroline. He also leaves behind daughters-in-law Elaine, Aoife, and Louise, a son-in-law Noel, and eleven cherished grandchildren: Aaron, Kate, Daniel, Nicole, Emily, and Conall. His siblings, Peter (and Liz), Paul (and Marie), and Catherine, along with numerous nieces and nephews, also mourn his passing.
McLoone’s funeral mass is scheduled for March 13, 2024, in Ballyshannon, where friends, family, and community members will gather to honor his memory and celebrate his life. His legacy as a dedicated public servant and as a beloved sports figure will endure in the hearts of many.
