URGENT UPDATE: Tributes are flooding in after the passing of former Meath GAA star Jimmy Fay. The beloved footballer died peacefully at home on July 15, 2023, leaving a monumental legacy in the world of Irish sports.
The Trim native, who was a key player for Meath, won the prestigious Meath Footballer of the Year award in 1980 and served as goalkeeper during the team’s triumph in the Centenary Cup in 1984. His contributions to the sport have left an indelible mark on the community and beyond, prompting an outpouring of condolences and remembrances from fans and fellow athletes alike.
Jimmy’s illustrious GAA career began when he played as a forward for Trim, alongside his brother Mickey. Together, they celebrated the club’s first minor county championship victory in 1968. His talents quickly propelled him to the Meath minor team, and by 1970, he was making waves on the senior team. In a pivotal Leinster final, Jimmy was called from the bench to score two critical goals, leading the Royals to the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship finals.
Messages of sympathy have been pouring in on social media, with one tribute stating:
“Jimmy was always up for the craic and there was never a dull moment when you had the pleasure of his company. Hugely talented at every sport he played. Rest in peace, Jimmy.”
Another fan recalled,
“Remember him manning the goals prior to the Boylan successful years. May you now rest in peace.”
The heartfelt remembrances echo the sentiments of countless fans who admired his spirit both on and off the field.
Jimmy Fay is survived by his wife Angela, children Darren, Aaron, Jamie, and Kylie, along with grandchildren Emily, Eva, Rian, Charlie, Eli, and Faye. He is also mourned by his brother Mickey.
His funeral arrangements have been confirmed, with visitation set for Friday evening from 4 PM to 7 PM at Mc Evoy’s Funeral Home, Market Street, Trim. The funeral mass will take place on Saturday morning at 11 AM at St Patrick’s Church.
This tragic loss not only marks the end of an era for Meath GAA but also highlights the profound impact Jimmy Fay had on the lives of those who knew him.
