Two Arrested After Viable Pipe Bomb Found in Carlow Home
A home in Co Carlow was evacuated on October 16, 2023, after the discovery of a viable pipe bomb. The incident occurred in the Kernanstown area of Bennekerry, prompting a swift response from the local police, known as Gardaí.
Authorities executed a search warrant at the residence, where the suspicious device was located. At this stage, it remains unclear how long the pipe bomb had been present at the site. In response, Gardaí evacuated the occupants and established a cordon around the property to ensure public safety.
The situation escalated when the Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit was called to assist. Upon examination, the device was confirmed to be viable. The EOD unit safely removed the bomb from the premises overnight for further analysis and planned a controlled explosion.
In addition to the pipe bomb, authorities seized a quantity of suspected benzodiazepine tablets during the search. These substances will undergo analysis to determine their nature and legality. Following the investigation, Gardaí have preserved the scene for continued examination.
The cordon around the property has since been lifted, with the area now declared safe for residents to return. Two men were arrested at a separate location in connection with the incident and are currently detained at Carlow Garda Station. Further inquiries are underway as the investigation continues.
Local authorities have not released additional information about the motives behind the presence of the pipe bomb or the identities of the arrested individuals. The community is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to ensure safety in the area.
