Ukraine Offers Drone Expertise to Europe Amid Rising Threats

UPDATE: Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urgently proposed to European nations a collaborative defense initiative to counter escalating Russian drone incursions. Speaking at a security forum in Warsaw just before key discussions in Denmark, Zelenskyy emphasized Kyiv’s battlefield experience and its capability to build a reliable aerial defense shield against Russian attacks.
In a bold statement, Zelenskyy declared, “We can counter all types of Russian drones and missiles,” as he highlighted the pressing need for enhanced security measures amid unprecedented aerial threats from Moscow. Since the onset of its full-scale invasion in 2022, Russia has drastically intensified its drone assaults on Ukraine, launching hundreds of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in single attacks. Earlier this year, Zelenskyy warned that Moscow aims to escalate drone strikes to an alarming 1,000 per day.
The urgency of this situation was palpable during the latest military exercises in Denmark, where Ukrainian specialists are sharing their expertise in countering drone threats. This initiative comes in response to a series of drone incursions that prompted temporary airport shutdowns in Denmark, raising significant concerns over national airspace security.
Ukraine has reported that it can successfully intercept approximately 90% of incoming Russian drones, even during massive barrages, such as the historic attack on September 7, when Russia fired 810 Shahed-type drones. “We will intercept them all,” Zelenskyy assured, reinforcing Ukraine’s pivotal role in European defense strategies.
The ongoing military collaboration includes the “Wings of Defence” training program, which integrates Ukrainian and Danish forces to enhance their defensive capabilities against UAVs. Zelenskyy noted that the outcomes of this mission will lay the groundwork for broader cooperation among European nations in drone defense.
In a significant shift, Zelenskyy also announced that Ukraine is set to begin exporting its domestically produced weapons, lifting earlier restrictions imposed during martial law. He stated, “You don’t have to start from scratch; we’re ready to share what’s already proven effective in real-world defense.” This move aims to position Ukraine not just as a recipient of international military aid but as a reliable partner in security.
Ukraine’s defense industry has surged since the war’s onset, with reports indicating it now produces over 4 million drones annually. With adequate funding, this number could potentially double. Approximately 800 arms producers are operational, over 200 of which focus on drone manufacturing—an industry that is rapidly evolving to meet modern warfare demands.
European nations are particularly interested in Ukraine’s interceptor drones, which reach speeds and altitudes comparable to larger Russian UAVs and are priced at around €4,200 each. These drones are designed with explosive charges capable of detonating near targets, offering a cost-effective alternative to high-priced missile systems.
Zelenskyy’s government is actively pursuing export agreements, with a focus on establishing production lines in partnership countries. A recent meeting in the United States aimed to discuss joint drone production, reflecting Ukraine’s strategic balancing act between acquiring foreign military support and bolstering its own defense capabilities.
As Europe grapples with the growing threat of Russian aggression, Ukraine’s offer to share its hard-earned knowledge and technology could prove crucial in fortifying the continent’s defense posture. The unfolding developments highlight an urgent call to action for European allies to enhance their aerial defenses and ensure regional security.
The situation continues to evolve, with Zelenskyy’s administration advocating for comprehensive strategies that integrate Ukraine’s defense capabilities into the broader European security framework. As the threat from Russia looms larger, the collaboration between Ukraine and Europe is more critical than ever.
