UK’s First ‘Karen Convention’ Flops with Only One Attendee

UPDATE: The UK’s inaugural “Karen Convention” faced an unexpected disaster, drawing just one attendee—Susan Rooms, the landlady of the hosting venue, the Black Tap pub in Redditch. Launched to celebrate women named Karen and those who identify with the term, this convention has become a humorous spectacle, leaving organizers and attendees baffled.
The event, which took place earlier today, was coordinated by Kevin Beresford, known as “Britain’s dullest man.” At 73 years old, Beresford has a history of unusual photographic projects, including collections of benches and roundabouts. He aimed to “reclaim” the term Karen, which often carries negative connotations, by creating a calendar featuring twelve women named Karen or embodying the stereotype.
With promotional materials like bar mats and badges prepared, expectations were set high. However, when the clock struck 3 PM, only Rooms appeared at the pub. In a witty remark that captured the essence of the event, she noted, “If I could, I’d ask to speak to the manager—but I can’t because that person is me!”
Beresford humorously acknowledged the irony of the situation, stating, “It’s actually pretty typical Karen behaviour not to turn up to an event held in your honour, so I’m not surprised.” He further elaborated on the absurdity of the turnout, noting that even one of the women featured in the calendar arrived but opted not to enter the pub due to her teetotal status.
The lack of attendance has sparked widespread attention on social media, with many sharing the unconventional outcome of the event. Beresford expressed his willingness to host another convention despite today’s flop, joking that he might need to “bus them in” to ensure participation next time.
This event has not just highlighted a unique cultural moment but has also drawn laughter and conversation across social platforms. The notion of a convention celebrating a term often used to mock has taken an unexpected turn, making it a topic of discussion among netizens.
As the story continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether Beresford will indeed organize another event and how he might address the apparent lack of interest. For now, the first “Karen Convention” stands as a light-hearted reminder of the unpredictability of social gatherings.
