Urgent Action Needed as Cork Communities Face Coastal Erosion Crisis

UPDATE: Residents of Pilmore Cottages in East Cork are sounding the alarm as their only access road faces potential destruction for the fourth time due to severe coastal erosion. The community, located just a few kilometers east of Youghal, is calling for immediate protective measures to prevent another devastating storm from cutting off their homes.

In a statement released earlier today, local residents expressed their growing fears following incidents in October 2019, February 2021, and most recently in December 2023, when storms wreaked havoc on their coastal road. “We have two problems. In the short term, there’s protecting the road and in the long term, the bigger impact of further coastal erosion,” said resident Eoin Riordan.

Residents report that storm damage has left them stranded for days, unable to access their properties. Kieran Kidney, who has lived in the area for 24 years, noted that beach erosion has progressed more than 30 meters, severely compromising the safety of their homes. With floodwaters sometimes reaching their gates, the urgency for action has never been clearer.

Local officials are responding to these pressing concerns. Patrick Mulcahy, a Fianna Fáil councillor, highlighted the ongoing €135,000 coastal erosion risk management study initiated by Cork County Council. While this study began in 2023, Mulcahy emphasizes that immediate repairs to the groynes—timber barriers crucial for sand retention—are essential. “The groynes which have worked so efficiently over the past number of decades around our coastlines must be refurbished to help protect our shores,” Mulcahy stated.

Volunteers in the community have already begun reinstating some groynes, and early results show positive impacts, with sand remaining in place and vegetation beginning to grow. However, the community fears that without significant government intervention, their homes remain at risk.
