Urgent Alert: Keep Lights Off to Deter Autumn Spiders Now
UPDATE: With the arrival of autumn, households across Ireland are urged to take immediate action against an influx of spiders as the days get shorter and temperatures drop. As these creatures seek warmth and mates, pest control experts warn that now is the crucial time to implement preventative measures.
Pest control specialist Robert Collins from MyJobQuote.co.uk emphasizes the importance of keeping lights off when not in use. “Spiders are attracted to light, so ensuring all lights are switched off can significantly reduce their presence in your home,” Collins advises. This simple step can help minimize the chances of these eight-legged visitors making an unwelcome appearance.
To combat spiders effectively, Collins recommends several strategies. One straightforward option is to invest in spider traps, available at local home and garden stores. “Place traps in high-traffic areas where spiders are commonly seen,” Collins explains. “These traps can catch and eliminate spiders without much effort on your part.”
For those seeking a more humane approach, non-lethal traps are also an option. These traps capture spiders without harming them, allowing for a gentle release outside your home.
Peppermint oil emerges as a potent natural repellent. Simply mix 15–20 drops of peppermint oil with water in a spray bottle and apply it to areas where spiders are spotted. “The strong scent of peppermint is effective in deterring spiders,” Collins states.
Additionally, spider-repellent plug-ins that emit a peppermint aroma can be strategically placed in rooms known for spider activity. “Use these in high-traffic areas to maximize their effectiveness,” Collins suggests.
Another effective method involves using vinegar. A mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water can be sprayed around entry points such as doors and windows. “The scent of vinegar will deter spiders from settling in your home,” Collins confirms.
To further safeguard your living space, consider installing screens on open windows and doors. Collins notes, “These screens will allow fresh air in while keeping spiders out, especially if you leave doors and windows open during the day.”
As the autumn season progresses, keeping your home spider-free requires vigilance. Collins urges households to take proactive measures now, especially since many people experience a strong aversion to spiders. Implementing these strategies not only enhances comfort but also promotes peace of mind as the weather cools.
