Urgent Alert: School Bus Drivers Demand Action on Unsafe Exits
URGENT UPDATE: School bus drivers in Kilkenny are sounding the alarm over alarming safety concerns regarding children disembarking from their buses. Drivers from Kavanagh’s Coaches report witnessing children exiting buses unsafely, prompting immediate calls for action to prevent potential tragedies.
John Kavanagh, who oversees the fleet, expressed deep concerns about children crossing in front of vehicles without waiting for buses to depart. “Last week, our drivers convened to discuss these rising issues,” Kavanagh stated. “Children are rushing off the bus and darting across the road, putting themselves in serious danger.”
The fleet operates 38 school buses on rural routes, often navigating roads that are barely wider than the vehicles themselves. This situation makes it impossible for other drivers to safely overtake while children are exiting. Kavanagh emphasized that just a brief pause after disembarking can make a critical difference: “If they wait just 10 seconds, they can get a clear view of oncoming traffic.”
“We need to instill in children the importance of waiting for the vehicle to move away before crossing,” Kavanagh urged. “It’s a simple message that could save lives.”
Many drivers have observed parents beckoning children across the road, further complicating the safety issue. “When kids are running across the front of the vehicle, the driver may not see them,” Kavanagh warned, highlighting the urgent need for awareness.
The Department of Education has acknowledged the significance of enhancing safety for children traveling to and from school. A spokesperson stated, “The safety and well-being of pupils availing of the School Transport Scheme remains a top priority.” They regularly collaborate with the Road Safety Authority and Bus Éireann to ensure the safety of school transport.
Kavanagh advocates for a national road safety campaign to raise awareness among students and parents. “The dangers are real, and it’s crucial that everyone takes this issue seriously. There have been accidents involving school children in the past,” he cautioned.
As this situation develops, parents are urged to discuss road safety with their children and remain vigilant. With the start of a new school year, the urgency for action is more pressing than ever.
Stay tuned for updates as authorities work to address these critical safety concerns. For the safety of our children, let’s ensure their journeys to school are as safe as possible.
