Urgent Appeal as Dublin’s Rough Sleepers Face -2C Conditions
UPDATE: An urgent appeal for assistance has been launched as Dublin faces dangerously low temperatures of -2C. A voluntary group, A Lending Hand, is highlighting the plight of homeless individuals, including an autistic girl currently living in a tent on the streets.
The founder, Keira Gill, stated, “We have so many homeless people like the autistic girl living in a tent, who, for one reason or another, cannot access emergency accommodation.” She emphasized the desperation of the situation, noting that the organization has faced “radio silence” from authorities for three weeks while the cold weather sets in.
As part of the city’s cold weather strategy, authorities have announced the availability of 250 emergency beds to assist the homeless population. The Department of Housing confirmed these arrangements, initiated in November, are fully operational across all local authorities. A spokesperson explained that the initiative aims to ensure additional temporary beds are provided for singles and couples in need during these frigid conditions.
However, despite these efforts, the situation remains critical. Gill pointed out a significant gap in accessibility: “Putting on 200 beds during the day between 10 am and 10 pm is fine, but after 10 pm, there is no way for anyone to access emergency accommodation.” She highlighted the challenges faced by those seeking refuge, as the freephone service closes, leaving vulnerable individuals without options.
The Dublin Regional Homeless Executive has activated its cold weather strategy, which includes the potential activation of an additional 76 beds when severe weather warnings are issued. Nonetheless, Gill’s insights underscore a pressing issue; many individuals, including families, are left out in the cold, unable to find shelter during nighttime hours.
This situation is a stark reminder of the urgent need for support for Dublin’s rough sleepers as temperatures continue to drop. With the local authorities already notified of their responsibilities and funding allocated, there is hope for a more responsive approach to this humanitarian crisis.
As temperatures remain dangerously low, the community is urged to take action. A Lending Hand is calling on citizens and organizations to help provide immediate support for those in dire need. “Every bit helps,” Gill pleaded, stressing the urgency of the situation for those exposed to the elements.
This developing story highlights the ongoing struggle of Dublin’s homeless population as they navigate the harsh realities of winter. The community’s response in the coming days will be crucial in determining whether vulnerable individuals can find safety and warmth in these critical times.
