Urgent Appeal for Information on Boys Missing Since 1969

URGENT UPDATE: Authorities have issued a renewed appeal for information regarding the mysterious disappearance of two boys, Jonathan Aven (14) and David Leckey (11), who vanished over 55 years ago in east Belfast.

Last seen in September 1969, their cases were highlighted in the recent Lost Boys documentary, which sheds light on several children’s disappearances during the 1960s and 1970s. Families have endured unimaginable pain, and police are desperate for leads.

Authorities believe the boys may have boarded a train to Bangor, Co Down, and are urging anyone with any information from the past 56 years to step forward. They stress that every detail could be crucial.

A police spokesperson stated, “The pain and suffering of not knowing throughout the years must be unimaginable. Our thoughts remain with the families of both David and Jonathan at this time.” This case remains open, with detectives exploring all investigative avenues.

“More than 50 years have now passed since both David and Jonathan went missing… This remains an open missing persons case with the circumstances around their disappearance still unexplained.”

David, from Memel Street, had shown no signs of distress prior to his disappearance, while Jonathan, from Sydenham Drive, was described by his father as a “happy little boy” who was thriving at Ashfield Boys’ School.

KRW Law, representing the Aven and Leckey families, expressed support for the fresh appeal, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation. Solicitor Owen Winters highlighted the importance of linking Jonathan and David’s cases to other similar disappearances. “It is never too late for justice,” he stated.

Winters also noted, “Incredibly, despite evidence connecting a series of other disappearances and killings, there was never any attempt to join all cases together. Until now.” He called for a centralized approach to investigations, which could benefit all families involved.
