BREAKING: Major developments are underway as the Land Development Agency and Galway City Council have received the green light for a significant social and affordable housing project at Dyke Road. The announcement was made earlier today, confirming plans to construct 219 apartments on the current site of the Black Box theatre and a large car park.

This urgent initiative, known as the “Corrib Causeway,” aims to address the pressing need for affordable housing in the area. Out of the total units, 90 percent will be designated as affordable housing, while 10 percent will serve as social housing. The project will feature 109 single-bedroom units, 100 two-bedroom units, and 10 three-bedroom units, each equipped with either a balcony or a terrace.

The development will also lead to the removal of nearly 400 parking spaces, although the existing public car park will still operate with 165 spaces, significantly reduced from over 550 spaces. This adjustment is set to create more room for essential housing while ensuring some parking availability for residents and visitors.

Residents can expect several high-rise blocks that will provide stunning views over the River Corrib. Additionally, the project includes plans for new public spaces, a pedestrian boardwalk, and outdoor play areas, enhancing community engagement and recreation.

This development is a crucial step toward alleviating the housing crisis in Galway, where demand for affordable living options has surged in recent years. The decision will not only bring much-needed housing but will also contribute to the revitalization of the Dyke Road area.

As the project moves forward, residents and stakeholders are encouraged to stay tuned for further updates on construction timelines and community consultations. This is a significant moment for Galway, and the implications for local housing will be felt for years to come.

Stay informed on this developing story as more details emerge about the Corrib Causeway project and its impact on the Galway community.
