Urgent Boil Water Notice Issued for 6,000 in South Kilkenny

UPDATE: A Boil Water Notice has been issued for numerous towns and villages in South Kilkenny, impacting approximately 6,000 customers after a parasite was detected in the water supply. The notice, effective immediately, affects areas served by the Mooncoin Regional Public Water Supply Scheme, including Kilmacow, Mooncoin, Mullinavat, Carrigeen, Newrath, and surrounding regions.
Authorities, including Uisce Éireann, have taken swift action following consultations with the Health Service Executive (HSE). The detection of giardia in the water supply has raised serious health concerns, prompting the precautionary measure to protect public health.
Residents are advised to boil water before consumption. This includes water used for drinking, making beverages, washing salads, brushing teeth, and preparing ice. The water remains safe for bathing and flushing toilets, but caution is advised to prevent accidental ingestion.
Uisce Éireann’s spokesperson, Shane Aylward, stated,
“We acknowledge the inconvenience of a Boil Water Notice for the local community and want to assure those impacted that we are working to safely lift the notice.”
The organization emphasizes that stringent EU drinking water regulations are in place to ensure safe water access.
Customers can determine if their property is affected by visiting www.water.ie and entering their Eircode, or by calling the Uisce Éireann customer care helpline at 1800-278278, which operates 24/7.
Residents are reminded of the critical steps to ensure safety: Boil water for at least one minute, cool it, and store it properly. The use of hot tap water is strictly prohibited for drinking purposes. Domestic water filters are ineffective against the identified parasite.
As the situation unfolds, Uisce Éireann is committed to resolving the issue promptly while keeping the public informed. Updates will be provided on the Water Supply Updates section on www.water.ie, through social media, and directly via customer communication channels.
Stay tuned for further developments as authorities work to lift the notice and restore safe drinking water to the affected communities.
