Urgent Call for Action on Cluain Darrach Housing Impasse

UPDATE: An urgent call for national intervention has been made regarding the stalled Cluain Darrach housing development on Convent Road. Cllr Albert Doherty, a councillor from Carndonagh, is demanding that the newly appointed Housing Activation Officer prioritize this issue as it affects community housing availability.
Currently, only half of the 58 housing units have been completed, while progress has come to a standstill since Donegal County Council withdrew its offer to purchase the development last year. The council’s decision was attributed to an inability to reach a final agreement, leaving many potential homeowners in limbo.
During a recent council meeting on July 30, 2025, Cllr Doherty emphasized the urgent need for resolution, stating that this situation cannot persist. He urged the new Housing Activation Officer to make the Cluain Darrach project their top priority.
This delay in housing development is critical as it impacts families and individuals in need of affordable housing in the region. The lack of available units exacerbates the already pressing housing crisis, which has seen demand far outpace supply across the country.
Officials have expressed concern that without immediate action, the situation could worsen, leading to increased homelessness and further strain on local resources.
What happens next? The Housing Activation Officer’s response to this pressing issue will be crucial. Community members are eagerly awaiting updates, hoping for a swift resolution that could pave the way for the completion of these much-needed homes.
As the situation develops, citizens are encouraged to stay informed and advocate for necessary changes to support housing initiatives in their area.
Stay tuned for more updates on this critical issue affecting the Carndonagh community and beyond.
