Urgent Call for Extra Classrooms at St. Oliver’s Special School

UPDATE: A critical plea has been made to Junior Education Minister Michael Moynihan for additional land to expand St. Oliver’s Special School in Tuam, which has reached full capacity just two years after opening. The school, which serves children aged 4 to 18 with learning disabilities, autism, and emotional and behavioral difficulties, has grown from 5 pupils at its inception in 2021 to a current enrollment of 40 pupils.
Today, during an official opening attended by over 150 people, including local TDs, Senators, and Councillors, Minister Moynihan was urged to consider utilizing part of the Toghermore Campus for the school’s expansion. The urgency of this request is underscored by the pressing need for more space to accommodate the growing number of students benefiting from the school’s specialized education programs.
Acting Principal Bernie Creaven expressed gratitude for the supportive gathering, highlighting the importance of the school’s mission in the community. The emotional weight of the event was palpable, as families and staff shared their hopes for the future of St. Oliver’s.
As part of his visit, Minister Moynihan is also scheduled to tour Esker National School and secondary institutions including St. Raphael’s and Seamount College in Loughrea and Kinvara, respectively. The implications of this visit could have lasting effects on educational resources in the area, particularly for schools supporting vulnerable populations.
The call for more land and resources is more than just a logistical issue; it reflects a broader commitment to inclusivity and support for children with special needs. As the community awaits a response from the Minister, the urgency of this situation remains at the forefront of local discussions.
What happens next is critical. Stakeholders are urged to watch for updates from the Department of Education regarding the potential expansion of St. Oliver’s Special School. The outcome will not only affect the current students but will also have a lasting impact on future enrollments in Tuam and beyond.
Stay tuned as we continue to monitor this developing story and advocate for essential resources for our schools.
