Urgent Call for OPW Meeting in Lifford to Address Flooding Crisis

UPDATE: The Office of Public Works (OPW) is being urgently called to meet with councillors in Lifford as flooding concerns escalate. This critical request was made by Cllr Michael McMahon during a council session on October 4, 2025.
Authorities report that the Donegal County Council is actively collaborating with the OPW on various flood prevention projects across the region, including key areas such as Burnfoot, Castlefinn, Downings, Glenties, and Ballybofey. However, Cllr McMahon emphasized the urgency of immediate on-the-ground solutions, particularly in light of recent flooding incidents.
In a concerning example, a local resident in Ballyshannon took swift action with a digger to prevent worsening flood conditions, highlighting the dire need for prompt and effective interventions. McMahon stated, “We can’t afford to wait. We need the OPW here to discuss how we can protect our communities now.”
Officials have confirmed that pilot schemes are currently being developed in Donegal Town and Letterkenny, along with a separate initiative in Raphoe. However, the latest developments underscore a pressing need for dialogue and collaboration to ensure the safety of residents.
Residents are increasingly concerned as heavy rainfall continues to pose risks across Donegal. The council’s efforts to work with the OPW are seen as essential in tackling the flooding crisis and ensuring the safety of communities. Cllr McMahon’s call to action reflects the urgency felt by many as they face the challenges of extreme weather.
As the situation develops, all eyes will be on the upcoming meeting between the OPW and the Donegal County Council. It remains to be seen how quickly officials can respond to the urgent needs of the community and implement effective flood prevention measures.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned for further updates as we monitor the situation closely and provide more information on how officials plan to address the flooding crisis impacting Donegal.
