Urgent Call to Protect Ireland’s National Bird, the Lapwing

URGENT UPDATE: The plight of the lapwing, Ireland’s national bird, has reached critical levels, with alarming reports confirming a staggering 90% decline in its population over the last two decades. This environmental crisis is underscoring the urgent need for immediate action to protect this emblematic species.
The lapwing, known for its distinctive iridescent plumage and characteristic “peewit” call, was declared the national bird by the Irish Wildbird Conservancy in 1990. However, it now finds itself on Ireland’s Red List of Birds of Conservation Concern, a stark reminder of the environmental neglect facing the nation. Even more concerning, while it once thrived across farmlands and wetlands, the lapwing population has plummeted by an estimated 64% since 1994.
From now until April marks the best time to observe these stunning birds as they migrate to Ireland from western and central Europe for the winter. However, both the native and migrant populations are dwindling, with the native lapwing particularly at risk. The decline is attributed to habitat loss, primarily due to agricultural intensification, peatland draining, and afforestation.
As Jack Morley, an advocate for Irish wildlife, emphasizes, “What does it say about us if we cannot protect our own national bird?” The lapwing’s decline is more than just numbers; it reflects on national environmental policies and priorities.
The need for public awareness is critical. Individuals can play a role by supporting organizations like BirdWatch Ireland, which is actively working to monitor populations and advocate for stronger protections. Contributions through membership or donations can significantly impact habitat restoration and conservation efforts.
The call for action is clear: awareness is the first step toward change. Morley encourages discussions about wildlife and its value, urging everyone to raise their voices until the collective conversation demands action.

As this situation develops, the future of the lapwing remains uncertain. It’s now up to the public and policymakers to ensure that this beloved bird does not become a symbol of environmental failure, but rather a beacon of hope for conservation efforts.
