UPDATE: Maths Week is officially underway, and readers are invited to engage with exciting puzzles that challenge mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills! This annual tradition encourages participants to dive into brain teasers that have stood the test of time.

Today’s featured puzzle revolves around the historical figure Demochares, an Athenian orator from the 3rd century BC. The puzzle asks: How long did Demochares live? According to the clues, he spent a quarter of his life as a boy, a fifth as a young man, a third as an adult, and enjoyed an additional thirteen years in old age. Can you solve it?

But that’s not all! Two more modern puzzles are also available for those looking for a challenge.

Puzzle 2: At Hallowe’en, children divided a collection of sweets: Dan took one third, Éilis took one quarter, leaving Fiachra with 5 sweets. How many sweets were there in total?

Puzzle 3: Another group also shared sweets: Aine took half, Brian took a quarter, leaving Ciara with 8 sweets. What is the total number of sweets?

These puzzles were crafted exclusively for The Journal by Eoin Gill, co-founder and coordinator of Maths Week Ireland.

Why This Matters: Engaging with mathematical puzzles not only enhances cognitive skills but also connects individuals with a rich historical tradition. This year’s Maths Week emphasizes the importance of mathematics in everyday life and aims to inspire a love for the subject among all ages.
