Urgent Clerical Changes in Derry Diocese Announced, Effective Aug 30

BREAKING NEWS: Major clerical changes have been announced for the Diocese of Derry by Bishop Donal McKeown, set to take effect on Saturday, August 30, 2025. This restructuring will impact several parishes and key figures within the diocese, marking a significant shift in local church leadership.
In a move that is generating immediate attention, Rev John McDevitt, currently the Parish Priest of Steelstown, will take on the role of Parish Priest for both Clonmany and Culdaff. Meanwhile, Rev Sean O’Donnell, the Curate of Three Patrons, is being promoted to Parish Priest of Melmount and Sion Mills. These changes, which affect multiple parishes, are part of a broader effort to adapt the diocese’s leadership structure.
Additionally, Rev Declan McGeehan, previously the Curate of Cappagh, will step into the role of Parish Priest of Steelstown and administrator of Culmore. Rev Malachy Gallagher, who has served as Curate of Melmount and Sion Mills, will now be the Curate of Cappagh. The restructuring also sees Rev Stephen Ward, currently the Curate of Long Tower, transitioning to Curate of Three Patrons.
In a notable shift, Rev Peter O’Kane will cease his role as Training in Evangelisation and Adult Faith Formator to become a lecturer at St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth. Retirement is on the horizon for both Rev Michael Doherty, Parish Priest of Melmount and Sion Mills, and Rev Charles Logue, Curate of Clonca, marking the end of an era.
Lastly, Rev Kevin Doherty, who has been the administrator of Clonmany and Culdaff, will return to his ministry within the Archdiocese of Dublin.
Bishop McKeown expressed gratitude to the priests involved for their willingness to accept new appointments during this time of transition.
The diocese and its parishioners are encouraged to stay informed as these changes unfold in the coming weeks, with an emphasis on maintaining community engagement and continuity in leadership.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as local communities prepare for the impact of these transitions.
