Urgent Crisis in Kilkenny: School Bus Services Fail Parents
UPDATE: Frustration is skyrocketing in Kilkenny as parents confront a severe crisis in school bus services, with lawmakers from various political parties expressing outrage in the Dáil. Just hours ago, Sinn Féin TD Natasha Newsome Drennan condemned the situation as an “entirely preventable crisis” that reoccurs annually despite predictable challenges.
Parents are left grappling with chaos at schools, particularly at Scoil Phádraig in Ballyhale, where nearly 80 tickets were issued for a 52-seater bus, which was never dispatched, leaving children without transport. “It’s effectively a ghost bus,” Drennan stated, emphasizing the distress caused as tickets were suddenly revoked.
The urgency of the situation has prompted a wave of responses. Fianna Fáil TD Peter ‘Chap’ Cleere articulated the need for reliable transport, declaring, “Every single child in this State deserves access to safe and reliable transport to and from school.” He highlighted the scale of the issue, mentioning communities from Ballyragget to Graignamanagh, and expressed hope for a pilot bus service for Ballyhale and Knockmoylan to be implemented swiftly.
Parents are left in turmoil as they receive last-minute notifications about ticket cancellations. Deputy Catherine Callaghan revealed that many distraught families approached her just before the school year began, discovering their children, who had held tickets for years, were left without transport options in their critical leaving certificate year.
Independent TD Michael Lowry warned that families in northern Kilkenny face being stranded due to outdated regulations. “The current system is outdated, unmanageable, and not fit for purpose,” he stated, outlining the distress and financial burden placed on parents across towns like Johnstown, Galmoy, Freshford, and Tullaroan.
The urgency of these developments calls for immediate action. Lawmakers are urging Bus Éireann to address these inefficiencies and reconsider policies, including the controversial over-70 rule for drivers, which many believe exacerbates the existing transport crisis.
As the situation escalates, families are left wondering how they will manage the transportation of their children to school. With mounting pressure on local and national officials to resolve these issues, the community is eagerly awaiting decisive action to ensure that no child is left without the necessary transport to access their education.
