Urgent: Donegal Hotel Federation Chair Calls for VAT Cut to Save Jobs

UPDATE: Aisling Arnold, Chair of the Donegal branch of the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF), has issued a stark warning regarding the escalating costs faced by businesses. Speaking on the Nine til Noon Show today, she emphasized that these rising expenses have made it “exceptionally tough” to operate within the hospitality sector.
The IHF is urgently calling for the restoration of the 9% VAT rate, highlighting that such a reduction is crucial to protect over 270,000 jobs across Ireland. Arnold stated that without immediate intervention, many businesses will be forced to hike prices, further straining consumer wallets and threatening the survival of local establishments.
Over the past 36 months, businesses have been under mounting pressure, struggling to cope with increasing costs. Arnold’s comments underscore a growing sentiment among hospitality operators that government action is needed to avert a crisis.
“The hospitality sector is at a breaking point,” Arnold warned. “We need our voices heard, or we risk losing more jobs and businesses.”
This urgent plea comes as the government faces mounting pressure to address the economic challenges affecting industries nationwide. The IHF’s call for a VAT cut is gaining traction, with many in the sector advocating for swift action to alleviate financial burdens.
As this situation develops, all eyes will be on government officials and their response to the IHF’s request. The implications of their decision could be profound, impacting not only job security but also the overall health of the economy in Donegal and beyond.
