Urgent: Furbo Parents Demand Stronger School Safety Measures
UPDATE: Parents and residents in Furbo are expressing urgent concerns over the inadequacy of proposed safety measures at Scoil na bhForbacha. Despite commitments from Galway County Council to install raised zebra crossings and signage, local advocates say these measures fall critically short.
The community committee, Coiste Sábháilteachta Na Forbacha, is calling for essential additions, including pedestrian traffic lights and a reduced speed limit outside the school. Local committee member Matthew Nevin emphasized that children currently feel unsafe due to heavy traffic and speeding vehicles in the area.
Principal Áine Ní Thuathail expressed her belief that the zebra crossing will not sufficiently address safety concerns, particularly given the volume and speed of traffic near the school. “We need more than just a crossing; we need to ensure our children can travel safely,” she stated.
The committee has urged residents aged 16 and older to lend their voices to the cause before the Active Travel consultation deadline on September 19. This final opportunity for community input is critical, as parents fear the lack of comprehensive measures could lead to accidents.
Community sentiments are at a boiling point, with many parents feeling their children’s safety is being compromised. The demand for stronger measures highlights a growing frustration among families who want to see immediate action to protect their children.
As discussions continue, the local committee is mobilizing support across social media and community platforms, stressing that every voice counts in this urgent matter. The proposed changes are not just about safety; they are about ensuring peace of mind for families in Furbo.
Residents are encouraged to participate in the consultation process to advocate for necessary changes that could enhance school safety measures. With the deadline approaching, the urgency for action has never been greater.
