Urgent: Galway’s Swim for Jigsaw Fundraiser Kicks Off This Weekend

UPDATE: The Swim for Jigsaw fundraiser is set to make waves this weekend in Galway, as participants gather to support vital mental health services for youth. The event takes place on Saturday, September 20, starting at 10:30 AM at Blackrock in Salthill, and aims to raise funds for Jigsaw, the youth mental health charity.
This initiative not only supports free therapy and support services but also emphasizes the mental health benefits of open-water swimming. Recent research confirms that swimming in natural environments significantly boosts psychological wellbeing. A major study involving 1,200 outdoor swims across 19 countries revealed that natural settings enhance feelings of autonomy and competence, leading to greater happiness and satisfaction.
Marie Hehir, a support worker at Jigsaw, highlighted the positive impact of sea swimming: “Galway has such an active sea-swimming community, so we see the benefits that taking a brave plunge into the sea can have. A quick swim in the Atlantic can bring calm, clarity, and confidence.” Hehir noted that the research supports the transformative effects of swimming on mental health.
The Swim for Jigsaw event is open to everyone—individuals, families, clubs, and schools are encouraged to dive in and participate. Registration is available online at www.jigsaw.ie/swim or on-site starting at 9:30 AM on the day of the event. Participants will kick off with a warm-up session featuring yoga and breathwork led by Marhehiryoga at 10:10 AM before hitting the water at 10:30 AM. After the swim, complimentary refreshments including teas, coffees, and treats will be available from Blackrock Cottage.
Jigsaw provides early intervention mental health services for young people aged 12 to 25 in Ireland, helping them build resilience and face life’s challenges with confidence. This fundraiser is crucial in ensuring these services remain accessible to all youth in Galway.
Join the movement by sharing your swim experience with the hashtag #SwimForJigsaw and help spread awareness while supporting mental health in the community. Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to make a difference and connect with others in a meaningful way.
