Varghese Joy, a senior nurse in Dublin and MNI convener, stated that these agencies often operate unlawfully, charging victims up to €4,000 for placements that turn out to be fake.

Nurses are lured by promises of employment in Ireland only to discover the truth after arriving in the country. One nurse shared her experience of paying thousands in agency fees and passing required examinations, only to find out her job offer was a fabrication. “Many of these nurses are devastated, having left their families in India to support them,” Joy emphasized.

MNI is urging nursing homes to collaborate strictly with legitimate, registered agencies. Joy’s organization has witnessed a disturbing increase in reports from affected nurses over the past year, highlighting the urgent need for government intervention. “We will guide these nurses to legitimate agents to help secure new employment before their work permits expire,” he explained.

The Department of Justice has acknowledged awareness of these scams but noted that the Department of Enterprise primarily oversees the Atypical Working Scheme. A spokesperson stated, “This Department works diligently to detect instances where false or misleading information is submitted as part of an immigration application.” However, many victims feel abandoned, facing silence from the agencies after their arrival.

MNI is calling for immediate reforms to ensure that job offers are verified before work permits are granted. “It’s crucial that the government checks with employers to confirm job legitimacy,” Joy asserted. Without these checks, many nurses could find themselves forced to leave Ireland after spending significant sums on fees.
