Urgent: Quad Bike Hits Striking Worker at Sellafield Picket Line

UPDATE: A striking worker at Sellafield has been rushed to the hospital after being struck by a quad bike during a picket line incident earlier today. The shocking event unfolded around 9 AM, as video footage captures workers in hi-vis jackets scrambling to avoid the approaching vehicle.
Witnesses reported chaos as the quad bike barreled through a peaceful protest involving approximately 100 workers from the Unite union. One worker was left lying on the ground, prompting urgent medical assistance. The injured man, whose identity has not been disclosed, was taken to West Cumberland Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The strike, involving around 1,500 construction workers including electricians, joiners, and welders, is part of an ongoing pay dispute with Sellafield management. Workers are protesting to demand pay parity with colleagues at other nuclear sites, such as Hinkley Point C. According to reports, delays at the site have been significant, with some workers experiencing up to two hours longer wait times to access the facility.
A Unite union spokesman stated, “At some point just before 9 AM, a group was hit by a small farm vehicle which left one of our members hospitalized with serious injuries. It was completely unrelated to the strike.”
Cumbria Police confirmed that three individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident and emphasized that there is no broader threat to public safety. Officers are working closely with union organizers to ensure the safety of those involved in the industrial action.
Unite General Secretary Sharon Graham expressed deep concern over the incident, urging Sellafield employers to treat skilled workers fairly. “The employers at Sellafield need to start playing fair by our members, who are all highly skilled workers operating in an extremely challenging environment,” Graham stated.
As the situation develops, authorities and union representatives are monitoring the picket line closely. The mood among protesters remains tense as they continue to advocate for their rights, while the injured worker’s condition is yet to be fully assessed.
This incident underscores the escalating tensions surrounding labor disputes in the region, drawing attention to the critical issues facing workers in the nuclear sector. Keep an eye on this story for further updates as more information becomes available.
