Urgent Report: Fatal Jet Ski Incident Claims Life on River Shannon
UPDATE: A tragic incident on the River Shannon has claimed the life of 19-year-old Wassiou Ayawe Moran, a promising soccer player from Limerick FC. The Marine Casualty Investigation Board (MCIB) has released a damning report revealing that Moran drowned while operating a high-powered jet ski recklessly at unsafe speeds, exceeding local limits.
The incident occurred near Killaloe, Co Clare, on May 31, 2023, around 5 PM. Eyewitness accounts confirm that the Sea-Doo RXT X 300 jet ski, capable of reaching speeds of 108 km/h, was performing dangerous tricks before capsizing. Moran, who could not swim and lacked proper training, tragically gave away his personal flotation device to a passenger before the accident.
The MCIB’s investigation highlights critical safety violations, stating that jet skis must not exceed 5 km/h within 200 meters of bridges or moored vessels. Despite clear regulations, Moran’s jet ski was operated recklessly in a narrow section of the river, endangering all water users. After capsizing, two passengers managed to swim to safety, but Moran was not found until 6:45 PM, prompting urgent calls for regulatory reform.
The report also noted that Moran may have been under the influence of marijuana, which could have impaired his judgment. This raises serious concerns about the lack of legal requirements for registering jet skis, despite recommendations for improved regulations from the MCIB.
In response to the MCIB’s findings, Tipperary County Council acknowledged the need for updated safety regulations and enforcement measures on the River Shannon. The MCIB has called for a mandatory registration system for personal watercraft to enhance safety and accountability.
The investigation has prompted widespread discussions about water safety, particularly concerning young riders and the need for stringent regulations. An upcoming inquest is set for July 2024, where a verdict of death by misadventure is anticipated, shedding further light on the events leading to this tragic loss.
Authorities stress the importance of personal responsibility and adherence to safety guidelines, urging all watercraft operators to prioritize safety in the wake of this devastating event.
Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops and reforms are discussed. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the critical need for safety in recreational boating.
