Urgent Rescue: RNLI Lifeboat Aids Stranded Paddleboarders
UPDATE: An urgent rescue operation unfolded at Keem Bay, Achill Island, as local emergency services rushed to assist three paddleboarders in distress on Saturday afternoon, August 16. The Achill Island RNLI lifeboat was called into action during its open day event, showcasing their services as part of the local Féile Chill Damhnait festival.
The alarm was raised shortly after 3 PM when a lifeguard at the popular Mayo beach noticed the paddleboarders were delayed in returning from a trip to Moyteoge Head. Rising concerns were fueled by an easterly breeze pushing them further from the coast. In response, the Irish Coast Guard dispatched the Sligo-based helicopter, Rescue 118, to support the mission.
The all-weather lifeboat, named Sam and Ada Moody, swiftly launched with a crew of six under the command of Declan Corrigan, Coxswain. Despite sunny weather and calm sea conditions, every moment counted as they navigated towards the distressed paddleboarders.
Upon arrival, the lifeboat crew found that one paddleboarder had managed to return to shore safely. Meanwhile, a local fishing boat had stepped in to assist the remaining two, showcasing the community’s quick response to the emergency.
Coxswain Declan Corrigan later commented on the incident, emphasizing the importance of safety: “The paddleboarders had made the right decision to come to a lifeguarded beach. Thanks to the quick-thinking lifeguards, additional help was summoned before they attempted a rescue.”
In a fortunate turn of events, all three paddleboarders were brought back safely, highlighting the critical nature of vigilance in water sports. Corrigan urged the public to always contact emergency services by calling 999 or 112 if they witness someone in trouble in the water, stating, “It is never a waste of resources, and our crew will always respond when requested.”
This incident serves as a vital reminder of the dangers posed by changing weather conditions and the importance of safety measures while enjoying water activities. The swift actions of the Achill Island RNLI and local fishermen illustrate the community’s commitment to ensuring safety on the water, reaffirming the call for vigilance and preparedness in outdoor activities.
As the situation unfolds, residents and visitors alike are urged to stay informed about local weather conditions and heed safety guidelines while enjoying the beautiful coastal waters of Achill Island.
