Urgent: Road Safety Campaign Launched in Oranmore for Holidays
UPDATE: An Garda Síochána has launched an urgent road safety campaign today in Oranmore as the festive season approaches. With 166 lives lost on Irish roads this year—a troubling increase of 5 fatalities compared to the same period in 2024—the need for heightened awareness is critical.
This comprehensive road traffic enforcement operation kicks off immediately and will run through January 5, 2024, featuring an increased number of Garda checkpoints nationwide. Officials are emphasizing the importance of safety as people travel for holiday festivities.
Minister for Transport Sean Canney addressed the launch, highlighting the need for pedestrians and cyclists to be as visible as possible during this time. “Visibility is key to ensuring everyone gets home safely this festive season,” Canney stated, urging the public to prioritize safety.
In a similar vein, Sam Waide, CEO of the Road Safety Authority, is calling on motorists to think carefully before hitting the roads. “Every decision counts, and we can all play a part in reducing these tragic numbers,” Waide emphasized.
The campaign underscores the urgent need to address road safety as the year comes to a close. With increased travel during the holidays, authorities are determined to prevent further fatalities and injuries.
As this story develops, drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists must remain vigilant and prioritize safety. Stay tuned for updates on this pressing issue as the festive season unfolds.
