Urgent Survey to Decide Future of Religious Schools in Ireland
UPDATE: Parents in Ireland are about to be asked for their opinions on a critical issue: Should schools remain influenced by religious organizations? The Department of Education will launch a survey in the coming weeks, seeking input from parents of pre-school and primary school children on several pressing educational matters.
Currently, an overwhelming 95% of schools in Ireland are operated by religious orders. This survey aims to gauge parental attitudes towards the future of these institutions, including whether they should transition to multi-denominational schools. Recent 2022 census data revealed that 25% of parents with children under four identify as having no religion, highlighting a significant shift in societal views.
Minister for Education Helen McEntee confirmed that the survey has been in the works for two years but is now set to roll out imminently. “It’s really important that we get a clear picture and understanding of what parents want,” McEntee stated, emphasizing the need for clarity on denominational versus non-denominational education, single-sex schooling, and the role of gaelscoileanna.
Despite the previous government’s pledge to triple the number of multi-denominational schools by 2030, progress has stagnated. Since 2016, only four Catholic schools have transitioned to multi-denominational status.
As parents prepare to fill out the survey at home, the outcome could reshape the educational landscape in Ireland. Stakeholders are urged to participate as their responses could influence key decisions about the future of schooling in the country.
Stay tuned for updates as this situation develops and parents are called to action. The survey marks a pivotal moment in determining how education aligns with the diverse beliefs of Irish families today.
