Urgent: Ukrainian Families in Clonmel Face Attacks, Fear Safety

UPDATE: Ukrainian families residing in a new housing estate in Clonmel, Co Tipperary are reporting escalating threats and violence, raising urgent safety concerns. These incidents, including vandalism and intimidation, have left residents feeling unsafe since moving in last July.
In the latest alarming incident on September 16, 2023, a car belonging to a resident was set ablaze by a group of youths. Gardaí are actively investigating this act of criminal damage, which occurred between 10:45 PM and 11:50 PM. One resident, speaking anonymously, described the terrifying moment: “First they broke the window, then they threw a bottle inside and burned all inside,” highlighting the fear that has gripped the community.
The modular estate, constructed to shelter 82 Ukrainian families fleeing Russia’s invasion, has become a focal point for rising tensions. Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan expressed concern that the violence may be “orchestrated for broader political purposes,” referring to the involvement of far-right groups who have targeted the site since its inception. Reports indicate that the attacks intensified after the security presence, previously established during construction, was removed on September 8.
Residents have been subjected to threats and vandalism, including broken windows, stolen bicycles, and harassment of children. “All we wanted is to feel safe, and we don’t feel safe right now,” one mother shared, recounting her experiences of rushing her daughters indoors when local teens appear with unleashed dogs.
The local community has been alerted to these issues, with Fine Gael TD Michael Murphy reading distressing messages from residents during a meeting with the Justice Minister. These messages detail a “hostile attitude” towards Ukrainian families, underscoring the urgency of addressing the situation.
In response, the Department of Justice has committed to engaging with housing body Tuath and local authorities to implement measures to combat the growing antisocial behavior. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for early next week to discuss actionable steps.
As tensions rise, the plight of these families continues to garner attention in Ireland. With many fleeing their war-torn homeland, the hope for safety and community support has been shattered by fear and violence. It is crucial for local authorities and residents to come together to address this escalating crisis and ensure the safety of all community members.
In the coming days, the response from local law enforcement and government officials will be critical in determining the future safety of the Ukrainian families in Clonmel. The eyes of the nation are on this developing story, as the community grapples with the urgent need for resolution and support.
