URGENT UPDATE: Global leaders, including Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tánaiste Simon Harris, are gathering in New York City this week for the 80th UN General Assembly (UNGA), where the recognition of a Palestinian state is set to dominate discussions. This comes amid escalating humanitarian crises in Gaza, with several countries poised to announce their recognition of Palestine.

On Monday, nations including France, the UK, Canada, Australia, Belgium, and Luxembourg will formally recognize the state of Palestine, marking a significant shift in international relations. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has indicated that he may recognize Palestinian statehood before the UNGA if Israel fails to improve humanitarian conditions in Gaza.

The urgency of this summit is underscored by increasing international pressure on Israel to enact a ceasefire. The European Commission has suspended bilateral support for Israel, freezing payments worth up to €32 million due to the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. President Ursula von der Leyen has also proposed suspending parts of the trade agreement that benefits Israel, pending a vote among EU member states.

During UN Week, the Irish government is prioritizing calls for a ceasefire, with Harris emphasizing the need to engage with various global partners to address these urgent issues. President Michael D. Higgins has suggested that nations supporting actions in Gaza should be excluded from the UN, a statement that the Irish government has clarified does not represent its official position.

“Achieving progress for the Middle East will be a priority for the international community,” said Taoiseach Martin, highlighting the importance of leveraging the momentum for Palestinian recognition to push for humanitarian efforts and lasting peace.

Despite the significance of these discussions, Palestinian officials will not attend the UNGA due to sanctions imposed by the US State Department, which denied them visas this summer. As leaders convene, they will address global challenges, including the ongoing crisis in Gaza.

Later this week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will address the assembly, where he is expected to criticize the UN’s stance on Israel, while Taoiseach Martin will deliver his national address. He will also hold a bilateral meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

Midweek, Martin is set to travel to Canada to meet with Prime Minister Mark Carney, focusing on enhancing trade links between the two nations. He will also participate in an event with Carney and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss advancing peace in Ukraine.

Since October 2023, Ireland has provided over €82 million in humanitarian support to Palestine, with more than €29 million allocated in 2025 alone. As tensions rise, Harris noted that the current moment represents “unprecedented stress on the multilateral system,” but he remains hopeful that the UN High-Level Week will foster critical dialogues.

This week’s developments signal a pivotal moment for international diplomacy regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with the potential for significant shifts in global policy and humanitarian action. Stay tuned for further updates as this urgent situation unfolds.
