UPDATE: A 20-year-old man has been charged in connection with a drive-by shooting in Limerick as authorities allege links to an ongoing violent city feud. Shane Blackhall, from Mungret Court, appeared via video link from Limerick Prison during a hearing at Limerick District Court today.

The court has remanded Blackhall in custody, with Judge Carol Anne Coolican ordering him to appear again on September 16, 2023. During the brief hearing, Blackhall only confirmed his name and acknowledged the court proceedings. The Garda investigation file into the shooting is described as “significant,” with Sergeant Denis Waters indicating it would be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions shortly.

The gunfire incident occurred on January 6 at Hyde Avenue, where Blackhall faces charges for possessing a firearm under suspicious circumstances and stealing a vehicle allegedly used in the shooting. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the incident.

Gardaí have expressed concerns about public safety, noting that Blackhall is “actively involved” in an ongoing violent feud in Limerick. They fear that if released on bail, he could pose a serious threat to the community. At a previous court appearance, Detective Garda Seamus Murphy indicated that the investigation has seen a series of shootings linked to organized crime in the area.

Authorities revealed that a search of Blackhall’s residence on July 10 led to the seizure of over €26,000 worth of cannabis, alongside a stolen Volkswagen vehicle that had crashed into a lamppost after the shooting. Forensic analysis confirmed that the recovered bullets were 9mm Luger ammunition, believed to have been fired from a Glock, semi-automatic firearm.

Gardaí have collected CCTV footage showing the stolen vehicle approaching residential areas before the shooting occurred. The investigation continues to be a priority for local law enforcement, emphasizing the gravity of the situation as multiple violent incidents unfold in the city.

As the case develops, the community remains on high alert, and authorities urge residents to stay vigilant. The implications of these events extend beyond legal proceedings, as they highlight the ongoing struggle against organized crime that poses a significant risk to public safety in Limerick. Stay tuned for further updates as this situation evolves.
