Urgent Update: Carer’s Support Grant Set for €100 Increase in 2026

URGENT UPDATE: A significant rise in the Carer’s Support Grant is set to be announced in Budget 2026, with an expected increase of €100, raising the annual payment from €2,000 to €2,100. This crucial development will support thousands of carers across the country and is part of a broader initiative aimed at easing financial pressures on caregivers.
Officials from the Department of Social Protection (DSP) revealed that alongside the grant increase, there will be a move to abolish means testing for the Carer’s Allowance. Income thresholds will rise, allowing more individuals to qualify for support. Specifically, the threshold will increase by €200 for single individuals and €400 for couples. This change is set to make a significant impact on families struggling to manage caregiving responsibilities alongside their financial obligations.
The DSP will also increase the income disregard in the Carer’s Allowance means test, allowing single caregivers to earn up to €825 a month and couples to earn up to €1,650 without affecting their allowance. This update is expected to benefit a large number of families who rely on these payments for essential care.
The Carer’s Support Grant is paid annually, typically in June, with the next payment scheduled for the first Thursday of the month. It is important for caregivers to know that if they are already receiving the Carer’s Allowance, Carer’s Benefit, or Domiciliary Care Allowance, they will automatically receive the grant without needing to apply.
However, those who are not currently receiving these payments can still qualify for the grant by filling out the Carer’s Support Grant application form (CSG1) for each person they care for. This means that even if you are not receiving benefits, you have the opportunity to gain this vital financial support.
As the announcement for Budget 2026 approaches, the government is under pressure to address the challenges faced by caregivers. Many individuals dedicate their lives to caring for loved ones, and the financial strain can be overwhelming. The increase in the grant and adjustments to the means testing will provide much-needed relief to those who work tirelessly in these roles.
Stay informed on this developing story, as the official announcement is expected to be made shortly. The financial support for caregivers is an essential step towards recognizing their invaluable contribution to society.
