Urgent Update: Former Donegal County Manager Michael McLoone Dies
URGENT UPDATE: Former Donegal County Manager Michael McLoone has passed away, leaving a significant impact on local governance and community initiatives. McLoone, who served from 1994 to 2010, was instrumental in several key projects, including the establishment of Public Services Centres across Donegal.
This news comes as a deep shock to many, as McLoone was a respected figure in the community, known for his leadership during pivotal changes in the region. He chaired initiatives such as the task force addressing the closure of Fruit of the Loom’s factories, which affected numerous local workers.
McLoone’s career also included significant educational contributions. He served as Chair of the board of what is now known as Letterkenny Institute of Technology, overseeing its transition in 1997. His earlier role as CEO of Beaumont Hospital in Dublin and subsequent appointment to the HSE board by then Health Minister Michael Martin further underscored his commitment to public service.
A native of Ballyshannon, McLoone was not only a dedicated public servant but also a celebrated Gaelic Footballer, representing clubs like Aodh Rua and earning recognition on the Donegal team of the Millennium.
McLoone is survived by his wife, Imelda, and four children: Michael, David, Philip, and Caroline. His funeral is set to take place in Ballyshannon on Wednesday, where community members are expected to pay their respects.
This loss marks a significant moment for Donegal County, as McLoone’s contributions shaped not only local governance but also the lives of many residents. As tributes pour in from former colleagues and citizens alike, it’s clear his legacy will endure in the initiatives and advancements he championed.
