Urgent Update: Gena Heraty and 8 Others Released After Haiti Kidnapping
BREAKING: Gena Heraty, the Irish humanitarian kidnapped in Haiti, has been released, along with eight others, after a harrowing ordeal lasting four weeks. The news comes as a relief to her family, who expressed they are “relieved beyond words” following their release from captivity on August 3, 2025, in Kenscoff, Haiti.
Gena, from Westport in Co Mayo, was abducted alongside a child and seven staff members from the humanitarian organization, Nos Petits Freres et Soeurs. Authorities confirm that the kidnapping was orchestrated by associates of notorious gang leader Jimmy “Barbecue” Cherizier, who has been linked to escalating violence and criminal activity in the region.
In a statement, Gena’s family expressed their profound gratitude to everyone involved in securing their safe return, particularly Tanaiste Simon Harris and the team at the Department of Foreign Affairs. They stated, “We are so deeply grateful to everyone, in Haiti and internationally, who has worked tirelessly over these terrible weeks to help secure their safe return.”
Harris announced the release, stating, “I am delighted to confirm that Irish humanitarian worker Gena Heraty has now been released. This is the outcome we had all hoped for.” The Tanaiste maintained close contact with Haitian officials, including Foreign Minister Harvel Jean-Baptiste, throughout the crisis.
The family has requested privacy as Gena recovers from this traumatic experience, emphasizing that their primary focus is her health and safety. They also acknowledged the overwhelming support from the global community, which provided comfort during this distressing time.
As Gena and the others begin to heal, the family hopes for peace in Haiti, stating, “We continue to hold Haiti in our hearts and hope for peace and safety for all those who are affected by the ongoing armed violence and insecurity there.”
The humanitarian organization Gena worked with, Nos Petits Freres et Soeurs, has faced significant challenges due to the kidnapping, including the closure of two hospitals it operates in Haiti. The organization had previously received ransom demands from the gang, reportedly far exceeding their financial capabilities.
This incident highlights the dire situation in Haiti, where crime and poverty have surged in recent years. The global community is urged to remain vigilant and supportive of the ongoing humanitarian efforts in the region.
As of now, Gena and the other released individuals are reported to be safe and well. The Irish government continues to monitor the situation closely, pledging ongoing support for those affected by this traumatic event.
Stay tuned for further updates on Gena Heraty’s recovery and the broader implications of this kidnapping on humanitarian work in Haiti.
