Urgent Update: Man Dies as Storm Amy Leaves 184,000 Without Power
UPDATE: A man in his 40s has tragically died following a storm-related incident in Co Donegal as the powerful Storm Amy wreaks havoc across Ireland. As of now, over 184,000 homes and businesses remain without power due to the severe weather conditions.
Met Éireann has just issued further Status Orange weather warnings affecting three counties, with officials urging residents to take precautions. The storm’s impact is being felt across the nation, with significant disruptions reported in transportation and emergency services.
Commuters are facing extensive delays on the DART and Irish Rail services. As of now, trains are not operating between Dundalk and Belfast, with DART services running approximately 15 minutes late. Further disruptions are expected, including possible cancellations, as trees have fallen on train lines.
In Dublin, emergency services are responding to numerous incidents, including glass falling from buildings due to high winds. Firefighters from Tara Street fire station have been deployed to secure unsafe areas. Meanwhile, Dublin Airport reports dozens of flight cancellations and diversions, with four flights redirected to Shannon Airport.
The Health Service Executive (HSE) has announced “significant disruptions” to health services in Donegal due to the ongoing red weather warning. Local authorities are advising against all non-essential travel.
The effects of Storm Amy are particularly severe in Galway, where GAA clubs have been heavily impacted by flooding. The Sligo LGFA has confirmed the postponement of senior and intermediate ladies finals due to heavy rainfall.
Residents in Monaghan are also facing challenges, with several local roads closed. The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is urging road users to avoid travel in affected areas.
As Storm Amy continues to develop, authorities are working to restore power and address the widespread issues caused by the storm. Telecommunications companies are deploying additional generators to mitigate power disruptions.
