Urgent Update: New Surgical Hub for Donegal Cancer Patients Announced
UPDATE: A breakthrough for cancer patients in Donegal as Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill announces a new surgical hub at Letterkenny University Hospital during a call to local advocate Betty Holmes, this morning at 8:15 AM.
This significant development includes the addition of 30 ambulatory day oncology chairs, comprising 15 new and 15 replacement chairs, aiming to enhance patient care and reduce the burden on families. This announcement marks a pivotal moment for the Donegal cancer care community.
Minister Carroll MacNeill’s call to Holmes, who has spent over 20 years advocating for local cancer services, symbolizes recognition for relentless efforts by Donegal Action for Cancer Care (DACC). For the first time, a Health Minister personally contacted Holmes, inviting her to join the formal announcement at the hospital.
“It was a magical moment… a great recognition of the ongoing work of Donegal Action for Cancer Care,” said Betty Holmes, reflecting on the emotional experience.
The Minister outlined a two-year target for the surgical hub’s completion, pending planning and tendering processes. This timely development is expected to alleviate pressure on Emergency Departments and acute hospital beds by managing day cases and minor procedures.
Previously, the only surgical hub proposed for the North West was in Sligo. Now, with both Sligo and Letterkenny facilities approved, hopes soar for improved access and quality of care for Donegal patients. “Yes, there are still specific cancers that will have to go to Dublin or Galway. But it’s a light at the end of a very dark tunnel,” Holmes emphasized.
Minister Carroll MacNeill acknowledged the hard work of advocates like Holmes, stating, “It’s a big important step forward… I want to commend Betty and all of the advocates in this region for their excellent advocacy.”
As the Minister set a clear timeline, Holmes vowed to remain vigilant. “I’ll still be sitting on top of it, as will my friends in DACC,” she stated, underscoring the community’s commitment to ensuring the hub’s timely establishment.
This announcement is not just a victory for local health services; it is a testament to the power of community advocacy in driving change. As preparations for the surgical hub progress, the focus will remain on improving patient experiences and reducing travel costs for families navigating cancer care.
Stay tuned for more updates as this developing story unfolds and the community rallies behind this vital healthcare improvement.
