Urgent Update: UHG Faces COVID-19 Surge and Long A&E Waits
UPDATE: University Hospital Galway (UHG) is currently overwhelmed with COVID-19 outbreaks affecting two wards, leading to alarmingly long wait times in the Emergency Department (A&E). Just this past weekend, an astonishing 420 patients sought care at the A&E, and today, 49 patients are reported to be waiting for beds.
The situation at UHG is dire, with all available beds currently occupied. As a result, patients are facing extended delays for admission from the A&E to a hospital ward. Hospital officials are working tirelessly to discharge patients who are ready to leave in an effort to free up beds for new admissions.
In response to the escalating situation, some elective procedures are being cancelled. Hospital authorities are prioritizing urgent and time-sensitive cases, and patients whose procedures are impacted are being contacted directly.
The Health Service Executive (HSE) is urging those requiring emergency care to attend the Emergency Department, assuring them that they will be prioritized.
The urgency of this situation cannot be overstated; with the ongoing COVID-19 outbreaks, UHG is facing unprecedented challenges. Every effort is being made to manage patient flow and maintain care standards amidst rising demand.
As the situation develops, officials continue to monitor patient admissions and are committed to keeping the public informed. For now, anyone experiencing a medical emergency is advised to seek immediate care at UHG.
