Urgent Upgrade Works Set for Kilkenny’s Ferry Mountgarret Bridge
UPDATE: Major infrastructure upgrades are set to begin on the Ferry Mountgarret Bridge in January 2024, requiring diversions for motorists. This critical project aims to enhance the connectivity between South Kilkenny and County Wexford, just outside New Ross.
At a recent meeting of the Callan Thomastown municipal district, Area Engineer Declan Murphy confirmed that tender documents will be published next month, with hopes to appoint a contractor in the first quarter of 2024. The bridge, which has served the community for nearly 100 years, was closed for survey works last summer.
The survey revealed that the bridge is in surprisingly good condition for its age, but essential upgrades are necessary. Key improvements will include extensive steel work, painting, and repairs to the cement parapets. These upgrades are vital to ensure the bridge remains safe and functional for the thousands of vehicles that rely on it daily.
Residents and commuters should brace for the upcoming diversions as the construction progresses, which is expected to impact traffic flow in the area. The local community is encouraged to stay informed about the developments as they unfold.
This urgent infrastructure work aims not only to preserve an important local landmark but also to enhance safety for all who use the bridge. Further updates will be provided as the project moves forward, making it essential for locals to keep track of new information.
Stay tuned for more details as they emerge, and prepare for the change that will improve travel and safety in the region!
