UPDATE: An Coimisiún Toghcháin will host an urgent voter registration drive at ATU Galway tomorrow, October 2, aimed at mobilizing students ahead of the Presidential election on October 24. This initiative comes as new data reveals that a staggering 68% of eligible voters aged 18–34 have yet to register, missing their chance to vote in the last election.

The electoral commission, in collaboration with the Students’ Union, is prioritizing outreach to young voters who are crucial for shaping the future of Ireland. Art O’Leary, Chief Executive of An Coimisiún, stated, “Already during this Presidential election campaign, we have met so many young people who are engaged, interested and want to use their votes to decide who will be our next President, but who have questions about registration and voting.”

With approximately 60,000 young people turning 18 since the last general election, many are now in college and preparing to vote for the first time. The drive will provide essential information about the registration process and how to vote. Attendees can register at checktheregister.ie before the fast-approaching October 7 deadline.

This voter registration effort follows successful engagements with young people at major events like the Electric Picnic and the Ploughing Championships. An Coimisiún aims to meet students where they are and inspire them to make their voices heard in the upcoming election.

The registration drive at ATU Galway is part of a broader campaign, with additional events scheduled at various colleges across Ireland including Trinity College Dublin on September 15 and University College Cork on October 6.

As the deadline approaches, students are urged to seize this opportunity to register and participate in the democratic process. The time to act is now—don’t miss the chance to make your voice count!
