Urgent Warning: Counterfeit £20 Notes Flood Donegal Businesses

UPDATE: Authorities in Donegal are issuing an urgent warning about the circulation of counterfeit £20 Sterling notes following a troubling incident in Bundoran. On September 16, 2025, between 5:00 PM and 5:30 PM, a man entered a local business and attempted to use multiple fake notes, leaving staff unaware until he was long gone.
Gardai are urging all businesses and customers to remain vigilant. Local police spokesman Niall Maguire emphasized the importance of checking notes carefully, as these counterfeits could lead to significant financial losses for unsuspecting businesses.
“Businesses must be on high alert to avoid being duped by these counterfeit notes,”
Maguire stated, underscoring the growing concern among local merchants.
The counterfeit notes are reported to be of high quality, making them difficult to distinguish from genuine currency. Authorities are advising anyone who suspects they have received a fake note to report it immediately to the local police.
As this situation develops, businesses throughout Donegal are advised to train staff on how to identify counterfeit currency effectively. The urgency of this alert cannot be overstated—failure to act could result in serious financial repercussions.
Stay tuned for further updates as Gardai continue their investigation into this incident and work to track down the individual responsible for distributing the fake notes. This is a developing story that could affect many in the local community, so sharing this information is crucial to protect others from falling victim to this scheme.
